Statement of Condemnation
Date: October 10, 2025
Subject: Condemnation of the attack on Chief Justice of India, Hon’ble Justice B. R. Gavai
The National Dalit Christian Watch (NDCW) strongly condemns the recent act of aggression against Chief Justice of India, Hon’ble Justice B. R. Gavai, inside the Supreme Court. This shameful incident is not merely a personal attack but an affront to the ideals of justice, equality, and dignity enshrined in our Constitution and rooted in our faith.
Justice Gavai’s leadership as the first Dalit Chief Justice in decades represents a moral and spiritual milestone for the struggle toward an inclusive India. To target him is to wound the nation’s conscience and to expose the persistent caste anxieties that resist equality.
We note with deep concern the growing intolerance and polarization in public discourse, especially when judicial pronouncements or comments are perceived through communal or caste-based lenses. Disagreements with judicial decisions must be expressed through lawful and respectful means, never through violence or humiliation. The courtroom must remain a space of reasoned debate and constitutional ethics.
As followers of Christ, it is important than ever before for us to uphold and strive for justice and compassion, at a time when our political and social environments are deeply vitiated. Scripture reminds us that “the Lord loves justice and will not forsake the oppressed” (Psalm 37:28). We, therefore, stand in solidarity with Justice Gavai and all those who uphold the rule of law amidst hostility.
NDCW urges all faith communities, civil society groups, and legal institutions to reaffirm their dedication to non-violence, respect, and the divine call to “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God” (Micah 6:8).
We also express our solidarity with CJI Gavai and all members of the judiciary who continue to discharge their duties fearlessly in the face of hostility and provocation. The rule of law, not the rule of outrage, must guide our nation’s collective conscience.
In Solidarity.
