The National Dalit Christian Watch (NDCW) joins millions around the world in this hour of grief over the passing of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. He was 88 years old.

As he leaves behind an incredible legacy deeply rooted in our faith, worthy of emulation, it is important to celebrate his life and the extraordinary journey he has had by becoming the first pope from outside Europe in more than a thousand years. He was the first Jesuit ever to become Pope in the Order’s nearly 500-year history.

Pope Francis’ papacy stands out remarkably for his extraordinary attempts to execute reforms within the Catholic Church. His vocal stance on social issues exemplifies his deep compassion, humility and profound commitment to serving the poor and the less well-to-do. He never minced words in condemning Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, and made a daily call to a Gaza City parish to check in on the Catholic community there. His well-articulated views on the favourable treatment of all people, irrespective of their nationality, gender, and orientation, make him stand out from his predecessors. He strove to promote inter-religious dialogue and took an objective stance on many social concerns, including climate change and the refugee problem.

We here at NDCW offer our prayers and deep condolences to all the faithful of the Catholic Church across the world grieving this tremendous loss. May the Lord our God grant blessed repose and eternal rest to the Holy Father Pope Francis. May his life guide us towards true spiritual enlightenment.
